Conscious consumerism is an approach to buying and using products or services in a way that considers the impact of buying and using those products or services. By slowing down and thinking about how we can align our values with the things we purchase and the companies we support, we can be intentional about choosing sustainable options. Below are a few tips to practice conscious consumerism!
Shop Ethically and Eco-Friendly
When shopping, look for companies that:
- Produce products in the most environmentally conscious and socially responsible way possible (with verified certifications!)
- Practice transparency and educate their consumers
- Give back to organizations making a difference in the world
Shop Products With More Sustainable, or No Packaging
When shopping, look for products
- That have minimal packaging, especially plastic
- Have packaging made of recycled or biodegradable materials
- Have packaging made of easily recyclable materials, like glass
- That can be purchased in bulk
Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle
Instead of throwing away items once they have reached the “end of their life,” choose to give them new life by reusing them, repurposing them into something new, or recycling them if necessary.
Spread Awareness
Sharing sustainable initiatives, whether it’s by word of mouth to friends and family, on social media with followers, or at professional events, is a great way to spread awareness about sustainability within the consumer product industry.
There's no way to be a perfectly conscious consumer- but by choosing to make differences in our purchasing habits, we can help limit our waste and give support to companies doing good!
