Blue Ridge Marathon * April 13 * Roanoke, VA
The Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Marathon Series has certainly earned its title of “America’s Toughest Road Marathon”, challenging runners with over 7,430 ft. in elevation change over the 26 miles of the famously scenic parkway. That’s more than any other road marathon in the U.S. The event doesn’t only go for toughness, they also go for sustainability. Owned and operated by the Roanoke Outside Foundation, the mission is to make outdoor activity and environmental stewardship a core component of our community’s lifestyle by promoting a “conservation through recreation” philosophy. This year is the Blue Ridge Marathon’s 10th anniversary of being a green event. The event avoids giving out goodie bags of junk and papers that equate to unnecessary event waste, and they prefer you throw the cups on the ground instead of a trash bag at aid stations because it makes it easier to sort and compost the 24,000 cups they use each year. This year, “dedicated to reducing the impact of our event on the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and our home”, they partnered with Recover. The new 2019 Blue Ridge Marathon shirts will divert 22,480 plastic bottles from the landfill, 5.8 million gallons of water and 34,085 lbs of CO2 emissions. The full, half, and 10k are all fun mountain courses and finish in Roanoke with live music and beer. All proceeds of the non-profit event benefit the parkway and local charities.
High Water Festival * April 13-14 * N. Charleston, SC
A celebration of music, food, and libations curated by Shovels & Rope, Recover has been the official merchandise partner of High Water Festival from its beginning three years ago, and this year, we’ll be set up live screen printing at the event so definitely come check it out! A full on music, eats, and drinks experience, High Water Festival is hitting the stage with quite the line-up this year including: Leon Bridges, the Head and the Heart, Shovels & Rope, the Preservation Jazz Hall Band, the War and Treaty, Mitski, and Dr. Dog. Beyond the music, High Water also offers experiences such as “Pass the Peas”, highlighting top chefs and the best southern cuisine in a family-style dining event and the “Low Tide Social”, featuring oysters and specialty cocktails from Charleston’s best bartenders. Recover values providing products and services that build long-term partnership, and heading back to High Water is something we look forward to every year.
TUCK Fest @ USNWC * April 25-28 * Charlotte, NC
Hosted by the U.S. National Whitewater Center, TUCK Fest has become the largest celebration of the outdoor lifestyle in the U.S. Four days are packed with music, competitions, demos, clinics, and yoga offerings, and here’s the kicker- to go out and simply enjoy the music, sites, and yoga classes- it’s free. The event offers the opportunity for both local enthusiasts and U.S. and international professional athletes to take on over 35 trail running, kayaking, rafting, biking, climbing, stand-up paddle boarding, obstacle, and adventure racing competitions. Crowds will gather to watch climbers maneuver up the holds of an overhanging wall as fast as they can for a $15,000 cash purse, only to jump off once they reach the top of the climb and take a 45-foot plunge into the pool of the world’s largest deep water solo climbing complex, and thousands will compete in events on both the trails and the water. Grammy award winning Fantastic Negrito, Tyler Childers, The Milk Carton Kids, J. Roddy Walston & the Business and more will take the stage as kayakers run “Big Drop” on the surrounding whitewater competition channel and people fly overhead on zip lines. There’s something for everyone at TUCK Fest. We partnered with USNWC in 2014, which means this will be our 5th Tuck Fest in a row!
Big Sur Marathon * April 28 * Big Sur to Carmel
Taking place on the renowned scenic and pristine Highway 1, the Big Sur Marathon welcomes runners and walkers to take stride on the “ragged edge” of the California coastline. Recover is the Big Sur Marathon’s official Green Team partner and merchandise provider. Offering everything from a full marathon to the By-the-Bay 3K on April 27, the event attracts big name runners and kids on the go alike. The Big Sur Marathon began in 1986, and since has broken out as a leader within the event and running industry in sustainability and green events. Partner Blue Strike Environmental works with Big Sur Marathon and other associated events to move towards zero waste through reduce, re-use, recycling efforts, and making sustainable sourcing choices, such as Recover sustainable apparel. There are no trash cans at the marathon. Bottles, can, plastic, and cardboard are recycled. Heat sheets, foil-lined wrappers, and performance nutrition packaging are also separated and up-cycled. Compostable items such as food waste, plates, and utensils are collected and sent to the Monterey Regional Waste Management’s anaerobic digester, and leftover food, abandoned clothing and shoes are donated to the Food Bank for Monterey County and the Last Chance Mercantile.
